What is Vesugen (Bioregulator)?

Vesugen is a synthetic tripeptide (Lys-Glu-Asp) from the Khavinson class of bioregulatory peptides developed at the Saint Petersburg Institute of Bioregulation and Gerontology. It is designed to target vascular tissue, particularly endothelial cells and smooth muscle cells of blood vessels, through proposed peptide-DNA interactions modulating gene expression in the vascular wall. Vesugen has been investigated in Russian biogerontology research examining age-related changes in vascular function, endothelial biology, and blood vessel homeostasis. The Khavinson model proposes that the Lys-Glu-Asp sequence can penetrate vascular cells and interact with DNA regulatory regions to influence transcription of genes involved in endothelial function, vascular tone regulation, and vessel wall maintenance.

Mechanism of Action

Vesugen has been investigated for its proposed interactions with gene regulatory regions in vascular endothelial and smooth muscle cells. The Khavinson bioregulatory model proposes that the Lys-Glu-Asp sequence penetrates cell membranes and interacts with DNA in promoter regions of vascular-expressed genes. Researchers from the Saint Petersburg group observed that Vesugen treatment in endothelial cell culture models was associated with changes in expression of genes involved in vascular tone regulation, endothelial barrier function, and nitric oxide synthase (eNOS) activity. Studies suggest that the peptide may influence the balance between vasodilatory and vasoconstrictory gene expression programs in the vascular wall. These effects are attributed to direct peptide-DNA interactions and chromatin remodeling rather than conventional receptor-mediated signaling.
